This rich collection of worship resources by the late David Ogston is compiled from a careful reading of all his papers and sensitive editing by his friend and fellow Church of Scotland minister Johnston McKay. The introduction states: "David Ogston was one of the most creative leaders of worship in the Church of Scotland" - this book well reflects his gifts and his deep love of liturgy. And his love of his native North East Doric is evident throughout, with a significant number of resources written in this dialect of Scots. (Where Scots is used a brief synopsis of the resource is provided for those who aren't familiar with the language.) There are three reflections at the beginning of the book powerfully describing a breakdown experienced by the author and the road to recovery. These provide a deeply thought-provoking context for the resources in the rest of the book and would be valuable to anyone finding they are facing a similar journey. As he writes in a meditation for Passion Sunday (p79) "the Redeemer is drawing men and women into His stupendous secret: there are no spectators, there are only those who are prepared to enter into the pain, and face it, and by so doing make it lose its power to diminish us" and in an Easter Communion prayer (p138): "Lord of Gethsemane, any cross we carry already has your fingerprints upon it. Lord of Calvary, risen Lord, you have gone before us. Remind us always that we are children of the Resurrection." The Communion prayers and liturgies, the reflections, poems, prayers and liturgies for Holy Week and Easter reflect a variety of styles (I rather liked the very different ‘Resurrection Rap' on page 69 which would be ideal for all-age worship) but every resource is crafted to bring us closer in worship to our risen Lord. This is a wonderful book to dip in and out of on your own Lenten journey, as well as a very useful resource for those leading worship in a variety of contexts.
