    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This is a book for every preacher; it offers insight into the art of preaching and also encouragement to develop preaching skills. The contributors to this book deal with preaching seriously, mapping out various ways to ensure its future. Stephenson writes, “I think the contributors to this volume strongly assert that forward - looking preaching will hang on three things…. It will engage faithfully with the Bible, it will engage directly with its listener, and it will engage prophetically with the world.” (p. 2.) The book is divided into three sections, in the first, ‘Contexts’, there are five chapters by different authors, each reflecting a different church background. The section examines how preaching is affected by culture and how it can also change culture (both the culture of our church and society). In the second part, ‘Practices’ there are six different approaches to future homiletics. The final section, ‘People’, deals with the formation of preachers, and their inner-lives. The book has a bonus in David Schlafer’s ‘Afterword’. Schlafer discusses the contributions and offers further insight by reflecting on his own practice. The book is completed by an ‘Appendix’ that outlines a preaching workshop that Schlafer has used.
