Awareness of the liturgical seasons of the year has increased greatly in recent years, as the popularity of the Common Worship Times and Seasons volume has illustrated.

Churches are constantly looking for ways to enrich their seasonal celebrations, and the first point of better celebration is better understanding.

Advent is one of the least understood and studied of all the seasons. It is as characterised as much by its folk customs as its biblical themes.

This book aims to help create a fuller theology of advent and through this enhance the services that a church delivers.

Kenneth Stevenson is the Bishop of Portsmouth. The author of numerous books, he has served on the Church of England's Liturgical Commission and Doctrine Commission.

Subtitled A guide to the celebration of Advent this book does ‘what it says on the tin’! Stevenson enables us to rediscover the season of Advent in its own right rather than as the run up to Christmas or rather vaguely the time of waiting for Christ. He uses the seven Advent antiphons traditionally sung at Evening Prayer with the Magnificat in the seven days leading up to Christmas Eve to explore the meaning of the season and what it means to watch and wait. And so God is invoked as wisdom; as he speaks through the Law as our Lord; as Root of Jesse taking us to Israel’s and our own sacred past; the Key of David; Morning Star, the King of the Nations and finally as Emmanuel, God with us summing up the previous six invocations and bringing them to the heart of the ‘coming’ of God to our world on the very eve of the Christmas celebration.
