Christian Bioethics: A Guide For The Perplexed

    Product Description

"Christian Bioethics: A Guide for the Perplexed" explores the subject of Bioethics from a broad perspective - from issues in medical ethics, to questions surrounding our interaction with animals, trees and our planet, the Earth. The principal discussion centers upon life's main value. As a result, the book questions what level of respect is demanded by all other forms of life and of how human beings should care for the world as a whole.

Agneta Sutton answers such questions from both the Christian and strictly-theological point of view. As a consequence, the book explores topics with a superb blend of Christian insight and theological support or counter-argument.

    Chapters of "Christian Bioethics":
Chapter 1: The Remit of Bioethics and Two Different Approaches
Chapter 2: The Beginning of Life
Chapter 3: Respect for Human Life and Personhood
Chapter 4: Abortion: Quality versus Sanctity of Life
Chapter 5: Euthanasia: Quality versus Sanctity of Life
Chapter 6: Reproductive Technologies and Cloning
Chapter 7: Genetics, Eugenics and Instrumentalism
Chapter 8: Organ Transplantation, Hybrids, and Chimeras
Chapter 9: Adults and Children as Research Subject
Chapter 10: How to treat and not to treat Animals
Chapter 11: Ecology and the Guardians of Creation

    Christian Bioethics

Intended 'as an introduction to the subject from a Christian standpoint' (p. x), this is a welcome and timely book. It concentrates on issues raised in healthcare and in medical research ('The Beginning of Life', 'Respect for Human Life and Personhood', 'Abortion', Euthanasia', Reproductive Technologies and Cloning', 'Genetics, Eugenics and Instrumentalism', 'Organ Transplantation, Hybrids and Chimeras' and 'Adults and Children as Research Subjects'), with two chapters on the treatment of animals and ecology.
Dr Sutton explains technical terms and procedures clearly, and presents differing viewpoints fairly. 'Notes' are minimal, and the 'Index' is selective, but there is a comprehensive 'Glossary', a full bibliography and references to several, mainly government, websites. It could usefully be expanded to include the major Churches' media sites, which keep abreast of developments.
The reader gains a greater understanding and competence in discussing ethical issues. Confidence to uphold Christian values in the face of secular and utilitarian ones is increased. Members of other Faiths will agree with much of what she says. Updates are essential, and Dr Sutton has built an excellent framework for future editions.
