Christian Bioethics
Intended 'as an introduction to the subject from a Christian standpoint' (p. x), this is a welcome and timely book. It concentrates on issues raised in healthcare and in medical research ('The Beginning of Life', 'Respect for Human Life and Personhood', 'Abortion', Euthanasia', Reproductive Technologies and Cloning', 'Genetics, Eugenics and Instrumentalism', 'Organ Transplantation, Hybrids and Chimeras' and 'Adults and Children as Research Subjects'), with two chapters on the treatment of animals and ecology.
Dr Sutton explains technical terms and procedures clearly, and presents differing viewpoints fairly. 'Notes' are minimal, and the 'Index' is selective, but there is a comprehensive 'Glossary', a full bibliography and references to several, mainly government, websites. It could usefully be expanded to include the major Churches' media sites, which keep abreast of developments.
The reader gains a greater understanding and competence in discussing ethical issues. Confidence to uphold Christian values in the face of secular and utilitarian ones is increased. Members of other Faiths will agree with much of what she says. Updates are essential, and Dr Sutton has built an excellent framework for future editions.
