This is an accessible response to the contemporary anti-God arguments of the 'new atheists' (Dawkins, Dennett, Harris, Hitchens, Grayling, etc). Atheism has become militant in the past few years, with its own popular mass media evangelists such as Richard Dawkins and Daniel Dennett.
In this readable book, Christian philosopher Peter S. Williams considers the arguments of the 'new atheists' and finds them wanting. Williams explains the history of atheism and responds to the claims that: 'belief in God causes more harm than good'; 'religion is about blind faith and science is the only way to know things'; 'science can explain religion away'; 'there is not enough evidence for God'; 'the arguments for God's existence do not work'. Williams argues that belief in God is more intellectually plausible than atheism.

Any book that seeks to engage seriously with the arguments presented by the established and new atheist traditions is, by definition, going to present some very technical arguments. These arguments are likely to be difficult to follow and engage with. With this in mind Peter Williams’ A Sceptic’s Guide to Atheism provides a superb starting point.
In this work Williams has found a way of opening up the principle arguments espoused by the atheistic traditions in a way a novice philosopher or apologist can understand. Furthermore while his arguments are relatively easy to comprehend Williams has not compromised the depth of the discussion. In finding such a balance A Sceptic’s Guide to Atheism helps the reader engage with some of the fundamental critiques of Christian faith; questions such as ‘Is faith the root of all evil?’ and ‘Does science explain everything?’ Finally, while addressing this sort of question Williams leads the reader through an exploration of the philosophical roots of both Traditional and New Atheism.
A Sceptic’s Guide to Atheism is a very readable yet solid introduction to the philosophy of religion. It furnishes the reader with some vital philosophical arguments by which some common critiques of the Christian faith can be rebutted.
