The Apostle Paul successfully spread the word of Christ across the ancient Greco-Roman world despite established systems of idolatry and the philosophy of Epicureanism, which considers the pursuit of pleasure paramount. Paul succeeded3, in part, because the ancient world was remarkably tolerant of new ideas and freedom of speech.

In many ways, the modern world mirrors Paul's era. Epicureanism is enjoying a revival, as can be seen on many websites extolling happiness as the true goal of life. Yet freedom of choice and of speech is increasingly at risk, both from government bodies and popular opinion.

For Christians, this raises important questions. Do Christians still have the freedom to choose a life honoring God? Is public preaching accepted or condemned? The answers will guide and shape modern Christianity.
