Drawing on encounters between Jesus and women in the gospels, this book explores the spirituality of women, especially 'Jesus spirituality'.

What does Jesus reveal about himself through his encounters with women in the gospel stories, both as a real historical figure, and as a continuing living presence?

In responding to this question, Joanna Collicutt McGrath does not shy away from acknowledging the strong erotic overtones of seeing Jesus as a sort of ‘romantic hero’. In the first chapter of the book she muses on what makes the character of Mr Darcy so alluring, and the resonances with Jesus. She then helps us explore several significant aspects of the psychology of Jesus as expressed in his engagement with women. The recurring and deeply affirming theme of the volume is that through encounter with Jesus, women are raised up.

'This is a book of deep wisdom, beautifully expressed.' - The Church of Ireland Gazette

    The Good Book Stall

In Jesus and the Gospel Women, McGrath has put together a book which seeks to challenge and enrich the understandings which we inevitably project onto Christ. It is a book, as she acknowledges, which is primarily written with women in mind but that is not to say that men cannot profitably read it too. In the opening chapter McGrath, who is a Psychologist, looks at the way in which Jesus can become a hero figure and - as a result - be viewed in a 'romantic' manner. Here he is compared to Mr Darcy. However in the subsequent chapters, we are shown a Jesus who interacts with women in a number of ways which challenge the notion of Jesus as transcendental hero who sweeps us to safety. Rather he negotiates with people, is present in the midst of woe and entrusts the witness of his resurrection to women who are sidelined by the other apostles. In the opening chapter, three main focuses to Jesus' relationship to others are identified: You are not on your own (Immanuel) Things don’t have to be this way (the offer of salvation) The invitation to ‘get up and grow up’ – (being raised with Christ) These themes are developed with imagination by means of interaction with the Biblical stories of meetings with women, and over the course of the book the reader is encouraged to be more 'grown up' in their relationship to Christ and to respond to his challenge to live out a Christian life, whatever our circumstances. This is a stimulating book, and one which will be welcomed for the new insights it brings to familiar tales.
