    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

'I seek to place Jesus within the framework of first-century Judaism, where he originally belonged.' (p. 141). Professor Casey's contribution to this subject is his use of 'the Aramaic documents discovered in relatively recent times' (ibid). He also claims a greater objective approach with more accurate statements of fact and interpretation, unlike, e.g. Bishop Tom Wright, who 'has looked at the primary sources in the light of his own beliefs' (p. 460) and so comes, in Casey's opinion, to incorrect conclusions in this context, about the Resurrection of Jesus. It is an 'academic' book, being extremely well written, and easily accessible to the general reader. Aramaic, Greek etc. words are transliterated in English, rather than appearing in the original. The 'Contents' may be skimmed for a topic, which are complemented by an adequate 'Index'. Because of 'the massive bibliography with which this subject area is plagued' (p. 509), one is referred to footnotes in the text for 'Further Reading'. There is an 'Appendix. Other Gospels', including John, Philip, Mary and 'the Secret Gospel of Mark'. As indicated above, a Christian will not be comfortable with many of Casey's conclusions. On at least one occasion, he says that something was not included, or explained, because it was obvious to the early Church (and which suits his argument); but he does not necessarily permit the same to be claimed of other 'missing' facts. The Resurrection 'appearances' of Jesus he thinks were 'visions' or worse (pp.488 ff), while Paul 'rewrites' the version of the Last Supper / Eucharist to suit the situation with which he is faced in Corinth (pp. 437 ff). Plenty of scope for further discussion! Nonetheless, there are many valuable insights and additions to our knowledge about Jesus, His times and His teachings which are now made clearer by the scholarship evident in this book.
