We repeatedly read in this book that God spoke to Moses, and we find details of what He commanded him. The choral is that Moses should "speak to the children of Israel." We are not considering Moses' own criteria, but rather the words that God communicated to him.

A good keyword for the book of Leviticus is holiness. God is dealing here with a people whom he has redeemed from bondage and brought into covenant relationship with him. In view of all that He has done for them, it is reasonable to think that they will do what He expects of them, namely, that they live as a holy people.

However, this demand for holiness does not depend only on His having redeemed them, but on the fact that He is holy. "You will be holy, because I am holy", 11:44. Among Israel's pagan neighbors, consecration to their deity often included immoral rites. For Israel, the divine requirements were obedience and faith, and a reflection of God's holy character in daily life. The New Testament standard is the same: 1 Peter 1:16, "Be ye holy, for I am holy."

The Lord Jesus is prefigured in the book. Various facets of his Person and his atoning work are seen in the offerings of the first chapters. See Hebrews 10.5 to 10: "Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and atonements for sin you did not want, nor were you pleased (which things are offered according to the law) ..." The high priest Aaron points to him as the great high priest of our profession, in saying of Hebrews 3.1, 4.14 to 16. And, the festivals of Jehovah in chapter 23 speak of the triumphs, the facets and the phases of his work.
