When Silouan's military service ended in 1892, he almost immediately began his journey to the Russian Monastery of St Panteleimon on Mount Athos. It was at Mount Athos that Silouan discovered a sense of the Christian faith that was similar to that of the Desert Fathers.
Silouan's life has been documented by his disciple Archimandrite Sophrony. This book highlights Silouan's character and philosophies, as well as the spiritual struggles which firmly established him as a staretz (a monk whose God-given wisdom enables him to serve as a spiritual guide for others.)
