William Brosend is a professor of homiletics and he has written this book primarily for the use of fellow preachers. He chooses as his subject-matter the rhetoric used by Jesus in his teaching and from this singles out four main elements for consideration. In the ensuing chapters he elaborates on these with much detail and often with a light-hearted touch. An interesting addition to the main body of the book is the inclusion of sermons by several renowned preachers, including himself. Each homily serves to illustrate one of the rhetorical devices previously described. Although a book of such scholarship may make some demand on the lay reader, it is certainly worth the effort because of what it reveals of the teaching of Jesus and the understanding it gives us of his life and times in their historical setting.
