This is an academic book written by Christian academics largely based in Australia. The aim of papers is to explore Calvin’s views on various subjects and see their relevance for today. Subjects covered include preaching, philosophy, the Trinity, and the Lord’s Supper. Some of the essays are more successful than others. The highlight for me was a fascinating chapter on Calvin’s style of preaching. Here the author shows that Calvin aimed to preach to the common man in everyday language. Other sections do not work so well and would only be of interest to the academic specialist or college theologian. Some of the writers use too much complex language and several times I was left with the thought of ‘so what?’ However, all the contributions let Calvin speak for himself with many quotes from his works. This alone left me with a renewed awareness of how great a theologian Calvin was. In summary this is a book for those who like to dig very deep into theology.
