Paul Today discusses and challenges popular interpretations of familiar Pauline texts in view of important controversies and debates. Who was Paul? What do we know about his relationship to Jesus? What was the role of the city of Ephesus? Can Paul's attitudes towards marriage and slavery be redeemed? And what of Paul's attitude to women and their ministry, and to homosexuality? Do we appropriately attribute to Paul ideas about justification and faith? Or is there more to know than meets the eye? Throughout, Need debates and reframes familiar interpretations of Paul through challenge and critique informed by both scholarship and pastoral experience. These essays make constructive, critical approaches to Paul available to a wider circle of interested readers.

Paul Today – Challenging Readings of Acts & the Epistles is designed to be a short introduction and overview of some of the key Pauline issues that arise from reading Luke’s Book of Acts and the Epistles written by Paul. The 11 brief chapters are designed to be read in any order or are stand alone in their content. Chapters range from familiar topics such as Justification by Faith and the Christology of Paul, to painting Paul in context of the New Testament and the Graeco-Roman world that he lived in as well as interpreting Paul’s views on Women and homosexuality. Although this is a slim volume of 140 pages it has plenty of content to interest and attract the reader. Dr Need continues the thread of theological thoughts and doctrine of scholars such as K Stendhal, E P Sanders and JDG Dunn and their development of the “New Look” on Paul. In an effort to strip away the centuries of post Reformation theology they attempt to get back into the sandals of St Paul and to review his work from a contemporaneous standpoint. The theology expounded will not be agreed on by many readers, but none-the-less there is plenty of food for thought. It is a shame that the book contains minimal footnotes and cross-referencing to other notable works, especially as it has some interesting and controversial viewpoints and conclusions. This book is a useful primer for those studying contemporary studies in St Paul with succinct chapters on a number of interesting areas of doctrine. This title is part one of a two-book series, the other title being The Gospels Today: Challenging Readings John, Mark, Luke & Matthew For details of Dr Stephen Need and a review by him, look at our ‘Guest Reviewers’ page.
