Veteran scholar-missionaries Robert L. Plummer and John Mark Terry edit this collection of entry points into the missionary methods of the Apostle Paul. With contributions from Michael Bird, Eckhard Schnabel and Craig Keener, this volume examines Paul's missionary methods from the perspective of Paul's activities in the first century and the perspective of his ongoing impact on missions today.

The first part of the book examines Paul's environment, activity and teaching. The second portion investigates the application of Paul's methods and principles to modern missionary work. The occasion for this book is the centennial of Roland Allen's Missionary Methods: Saint Paul's or Ours? a classic in the field which Paul's Missionary Methods enthusiastically engages with.

"The editors of this book have combined biblical and missiological scholarship that further enhances the relevance of Roland Allen's piece Missionary Methods: St. Paul's or Ours?, while also moving us beyond it to the challenges of a new century. Perhaps the most salient insight rendered is the reminder that each generation should avoid simple replication of the methods Allen assessed but should resubmit to the call to ascertain whether or how our missionary actions reflect biblical patterns and then take corrective measures where needed. Correction entails constructive self-study, which is always an emotive challenge. Missionaries, globally engaged pastors, students and mission administrators should read this, mark it up, think through its implications, and do the hard work of analysis for our time."
Dr. Keith Eitel, dean of the Fish School of Evangelism and Missions at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas

If you want to gain fuller understanding of Saint Paul's methods of outreach and church planting, especially with a view to learning which out of those methods may be definitive for the Church today, then you will find this stimulating collection helpful. Part One - Paul in the New Testament - contains interesting chapters on topics such as Paul's milieu and ecclesiology, and a useful discussion of suffering and spiritual warfare. But I found Part Two - Paul's Influence on Missions - particularly provocative in what it said about issues like indigenous missions and contextualisation. It's in this second part that the main reason for the publication of this book now comes to the fore. It's been written to mark the centenary of Roland Allen's "highly significant and still challenging book on missions, Missionary Methods: St. Paul's or Ours?" Since I had never encountered Allen's book, I found these chapters really enlightening, as I read about "Generational resubmission - the resubmission of each generation of men to the Word and Spirit of God", and learnt about Allen's philosophy of "indigenous mission", that is "self-supporting, self-governing and self-propagating". "Contextualisation" is relevant there, as is danger of excessively westernised patterns of missionary work. Maybe the truth of Allen's words was not fully appreciated at the time. But that has changed over the years. "Even though Allen sleeps, he still speaks - but this time people are listening" (the book's cclosing words). I do recommend reading this.
