2009 is the 150th anniversary of the publication of The Origin of Species and Christians continue to disagree about whether Darwinism should be baptised into our theology or rejected as anti-Christian. This book is aimed at Christians on both sides of the debate and hopes to further discussion.

In this book two distinct questions are under the microscope:

  • Is Darwinism compatible with orthodox Christian faith?
  • Does the scientific evidence support Darwinism?

The book begins with a simple explanation of the neo-Darwinian theory of evolution. Stephen Lloyd then opens the first debate by making a theological and biblical case against Darwin. He is met in 'battle' by Graeme Finlay and Stephen Pattemore, who argue that Christian Scripture and theology are compatible with Darwinism. Each set of authors then has a chance to respond to their opponents.

In the second debate David Swift argues that whilst science does support microevolution by natural selection it does not support macro-evolution. In fact, he says, the science undermines neo-Darwinian claims. 'Not so!' says Graeme Finlay, who argues that the latest work in genetics demonstrates the truth of neo-Darwinism beyond reasonable doubt. Swift and Finlay then interact with each other.

Debating Darwin will not tell readers what to think, but it will inform a more intelligent response.

    The debate of creation versus Darwinistic evolution is one highjacked by the rhetoric and bile of Dawkins, Pullman and others. As such it is a pleasant change to read a book on this subject that gets away from the anti-God arguments that drive both Dawkins and his opponents. Debating Darwin is a look at whether Darwinism is compatible with the Bible and whether Darwinism is scientific. Of the four arguments the weakest is, I am disappointed to say, the theological and biblical argument against Darwinism which relies on jumps in arguments that are not backed up by Scripture or science. The next weakest is that of Darwinism being scientific, again there seems to be a reliance on an attitude of this is what we teach so it must be right. The strength of the book is not to be found in the arguments but in the fact that this book exists. God created the world and we must claim back His handiwork. Getting into polemic will not do that. This book does not go into the complexities of science but equips the general church goer to understand the pros and cons of each argument and start to understand why this issue of who created the world and how is so important.
