"I cannot think of a more trustworthy guide than John Polkinghorne, who holds up both ends of the science/faith debate." - Philip Yancey

Quantum Leap is a reader-friendly and at times humorous book that thoroughly engages the reader into the story of how John Polkinghorne found God in Science and religion.

Dr. John Polkinghorne established himself as one of Britain's finest particle physicists with his role in producing the theory of the smallest existing particle: the quark. After 25 years of respected scientific research - including a post as professor of mathematical physics at Cambridge University - Dr. Polkinghorne decided to resign and become an Anglican priest and theologian.

It is therefore Polkinghorne's deep roots in the practice of science that makes Dean Nelson's book so interesting. "Quantum Leap" is not only a biography of a fascinating man, but also explores the view of God from a Scientist's perspective. Some of the most intriguing questions are explored from this scientific point of view, including "Why do we pray?" and "What is the purpose of the Universe?"

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

John Polkinghorne’s story - the eminent scientist, Fellow of the Royal Society, who became a parish priest - may be viewed as either a disaster or a triumph depending on your point of view. This account by Nelson and Giberson is obviously from the latter stable, and therefore sympathetically upholds Polkinghorne’s choice. Their book uses his life as a vehicle for offering a simple digest of his theology, yet one that could not fail to affirm quantum physics as its perfect training ground. Therefore both Polkinghorne’s own near brush with death, and the deeply moving way he nursed his dear wife Ruth through her final days, allow us insights into his appreciation of suffering and resurrection. Other experiences touch on subjects such as the sometimes perplexing issue of intercessory prayer, or the Eucharist, or the miracles. All show a certain pragmatism coupled with a deeply thought through faith. Never does he forsake his science, indeed he calls the idea that scientists are sceptical and doubt everything absurd. Nelson and Giberson have produced a very readable book that is true to the man. It can be thoroughly recommended.
