    Product Description

Marcus Borg takes some of the key words in the Christian dictionary and exposes the negative and unhelpful connotations they still carry today. At the same time, he goes back to the Bible and unpacks their meaning in a way that is both more faithful to the teaching of Jesus and more relevant to his followers today.

    Speaking Christian

This is a brilliant work that takes standard Christian words and phrases and first explains them as they are understood and used today but then rips them apart and re-contextualises them as they should be understood in light of how they were originally meant to be understood based on the language and culture of their origin. The insight this offers into both our current theological mores and the theology of the early church is deep and in some ways not for those of faint heart and unchallenged faith perspectives, because the reality, as demonstrated by Borg, is that much of what we think we know and understand we really don't and in many ways we have taken things out of context to an incredible degree to fit our theology when in fact it does not reflect the original meaning and theology. This movement back to the original biblical meanings or cultural understandings is incredibly liberating and really opens doors and windows into a faith that is likely much more encompassing and welcoming to the many that currently feel excluded or turned off by some aspects of Christianity. This book is therefore not always a comforting or mainstream book but it is an important book that needs to be approached with an unbiased and open mind - at which point the benefits to real understanding are going to be great.
Definitely one for all interested in theology, and certainly one for those looking to really understand the historic roots of faith.
