Anthony Thiselton is an experienced theologian who has taught at the universities of Durham, Nottingham, Bristol and Sheffield. Thiselton’s works focus mainly on Hermeneutics and the letters of Paul to the early Church.
The Last Things examines questions like: What did Jesus and the early Christians believe about death, resurrection, heaven and hell, human destiny and God’s ultimate purpose for creation? And what are the implications for Christian doctrine today?
Frankly, I believe that God’s plan for us as humans (and indeed the world) has remained ambiguous because of the divisive opinions that surround it. Discussion among theologians have led to the subscription to labels such as ‘Universalism’ or ‘Calvinism’ and the widespread impression that Heaven is a place where we go to sit in the clouds surrounded by light and music.
Works such as this one encourage thought that will challenge perceptions and attempt to interpret the true meaning of Scripture to clear up confusion. The result: knowledge that leads to a great sense of purpose and direction in our Christian lives.

This remarkable book is driven both by a sense of personal urgency and by distinguished scholarship. Professor Thiselton confronts his own old age and experience of illness in employing hermeneutics to increase understanding of biblical and theological explorations of death and resurrection. He addresses both doubt and belief about the resurrection of the dead. He explains contrasting ideas about God’s covenant and about both the sacraments and scriptural authority. He deploys biblical scholarship, theological history and secular academic philosophy to define and expound belief about the second coming, or return, of Christ; about personal resurrection; about holiness, and teachings about purgatory and punishment; about judgment and justification; and about the beatific vision of God. The scholarship employed in this proclamation of faith makes it a complex book demanding repeated readings. It also makes it a marker for serious Christians confronted by trivialisation of faith through popular science, secular assertiveness, and simplistic conservative notions of moral authority. It demands hard work from readers who are not academic theologians, but the rewards are very great.
