I do need to admit that I find Keith Ward books to be exactly what they are –considerations of ‘hot topics’ by and large written by a professor for his chosen audience – this is not a slight, anything but, however it does need to be said that they read largely like crib notes for academic undergrads. This one fits that bill and it’s exceptionally well done – it is pretty much all I would need to pass a first term in Philosophy of Religion and as such is probably all most people need to know at a basic level about the subject, and yes as such it does address the question of the irrationality of faith and give the basic responses needed to be able to discuss the subject with an ardent atheist. I really enjoyed this book but it isn’t immediately something I would recommend to everybody as there is a degree of understanding already needed to get to grips with some of the tautological arguments used by Ward, indeed at times it does seems as if he’s gone out of his way to include a few tongue twisters aimed at the brain just for the fun of it. On the whole certainly a book worth considering if you want a fresh update of the philosophy of religion arguments for a modern viewpoint analysis.
