In what has become known as the ‘new perspective’ on Paul, Tom Wright has proposed a vision of the apostle’s central message that does full justice to all Paul’s letters. In particular, he focuses on the God-centred nature of Paul’s gospel, arguing that ‘traditional’ readings of Paul can suggest that the apostle’s message is simply about us: our sin, our justification, our salvation.

Ambitious in scope, yet closely argued, Justification: God’s Plan and Paul’s Vision suggests that this crucial understanding of the theology of St Paul, and thus of the gospel of Christ, is urgently needed as the Church faces the tasks of mission in a dangerous world.

‘This is definitely one of the most exciting and significant books that I have read this year. Like all of the author’s work, I found it hard to set down once I had started to read it. Strongly commended!’ Professor I. Howard Marshall, Honorary Research Professor of New Testament, University of Aberdeen

Tom Wright is the Bishop of Durham and is a regular broadcaster on radio and television. He is the author of over forty books, including the For Everyone guides to the New Testament, the highly acclaimed series, Christian Origins and the Question of God, and the best-selling books Simply Christian and Surprised by Hope (all SPCK).

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

Forged in the crucible of academic criticism and in direct response to the reformed criticism of John Piper’s The Future of Justification – A Response to NT Wright, Dr Wright has responded with devastating and brilliantly argued work of awesome exegesis and hermeneutical standing. Probably the foremost proponent of the ‘New Perspective’ doctrine Wright, a master word-smith, takes on Piper’s criticism head on and displays his genius to produce a definitive text that will be a benchmark for years to come. A work of this quality is all the more surprising as it was written in fairly hasty response to Piper and was probably an unwelcome distraction from completing the fourth work in his impressive series Christian Origins and the Question of God. This book is not for the feint hearted and is replete with densely argued exegesis and linguistic nuance, but it is still readable enough for pastor or reasonably knowledgeable reader to enjoy, understand and grasp the majesty of Wright’s formidable grasp of this subject and its context in the wider scheme of biblical knowledge and understanding. For those who enjoy Wright’s work, this book is a tantalizing appetizer for the feast that must be following and it is worth every penny of its £10.99.
