Lies We Believe About God

From the author of the twenty million plus copy bestselling novel The Shack and the New York Times bestsellers Cross Roads and Eve comes a compelling, conversational exploration of the wrong-headed ideas we sometimes have and share about God.

Wm. Paul Young has been called a heretic for the ways he vividly portrays God's love through his novels. In this deeply personal, nonfiction book, he shares twenty-eight commonly and sometimes seemingly innocuous things we say about God. Paul exposes these as lies that keep us from having a full, loving relationship with our Creator.

With personal anecdotes and sharing the compassion readers felt from the "Papa" portrayed in The Shack--soon to be a major film starring Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer--Paul encourages readers to think anew about important issues including sin, religion, hell, politics, identity, creation, human rights, and helping us discover God's deep and abiding love.

Explore 28 "lies we believe about God" such as...

  • God loves us, but doesn't like us.
  • God is a prude.
  • God blesses my politics.
  • God is not involved in my suffering.
  • God is disappointed in me.
  • And more!

I posted a review yesterday and, as I wrote, I then started to read C. Baxter Kruger's The Great Dance. This has in no way relieved the growing unease I have felt with The Lies we Believe about God. It is very feelgood and just too all-embracing; Young passed over whatever may be uncomfortable in Jesus own words (like, if you love Me, you will obey My words, or Simon Peter in Acts stating that Judas Iscariot had gone to where he belonged). As Young's book has revealed what is underlying The Shack, so Kruger's book exposes what underlies Young's beliefs. Jesus said it is not His Father's will that any should be lost, and spoke to God in prayer that He had not lost of those which God had given Him. He also said that there would be a division at the end of time; like it or not, separation and loss are clearly stated, and neither of these authors look to verses like these! I have therefore adjusted my review rating. Enough said.

I've read The Shack, Crossroads and Eve, viewed interviews with the author, and wanted to find out more. He explains some of the ideas behind his books, it is very readable, no pretentious jargon or hype, but you do need to stop and think through all the implications of his beliefs and propositions, as well as how these lies have affected you! I'm about to read The Great Dance and Patmos by C. Baxter Kruger, who wrote the foreword to this book, to dig deeper into their thoughts. I found reading this was very liberating, he echoes thoughts I've had myself but didn't like, or dare, to speak aloud!
