John Owen was one of the great Puritans of the 17th Century whose writings and theology have gone through a welcome resurgence of interest in the last fifty years. His writings are a constant reference source for spiritual truths and practical insights. Dr. Steve Griffiths considers how Owen dealt with the problem of Sin, which, as with all reformed theologians, was a fundamental concern in his thinking. Owen's treatment of sin does not stand in isolation; it can only be considered in the light of his doctrine of God and what it means for a man to reflect that image.

It was helpful to have John Owen's work set in the context of the battles with established religion. How the Church of England leadership followed in the footsteps of the Pharisees who, in Stephen's words "always opposed the Holy Spirit." Acts 7 v 51. One quote struck in particular: "Most men love to hear of the doctrine of grace, of the pardon of sin, of free love, and suppose they find food therein... But to be breaking up the fallow ground of their hearts, to be inquiring after the weeds and briars that grow therein, they delight not so much, though this be no less necessary than the other." If we do not break up our fallow ground the soil of our hearts will not bring forth the fruit for our Lord spoken of in the parable of the sower. Owen had a pastor's heart and a concern his flock should not miss the grace of our Lord.
