Ask and answer the big questions about the role of Christianity in Britain.

* Is Christianity being forced out of mainstream British society?
From restrictions on the wearing of crosses to the abolition of Christmas nativity plays, a secular tradition is being introduced piecemeal into our way of life. Christianity is being marginalised. Christian social initiatives at local levels are now so severely restricted that several Christian bodies issue guidelines on handling local council prejudice.

* Is Britain’s Christian heritage is slipping away?
For centuries the Bible and Book of Common Prayer have been the foundation of British, language, literature and culture. Social action and welfare motivated and mobilised by Christian organisations predate the modern welfare state and British law is founded on a Christian system of ethics.

* Should Christians push back, re-engaging with politicians and opinion formers?
George Carey, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1991 to 2002 and his freelance journalist son, Andrew, show that if Christians are still the salt and light of British society then introverted Christianity must give way to engagement not defensively, but with confidence and hope. It’s time for a proper debate about the role of faith in modern Britain.

    The Good Book Stall

    Average rating of0.0

This book has arisen out of the current Secularization vs. Christianity debate that is raging in the country and as such is another voice to the discussion – a discussion that must be had. Having said that Lord Carey’s voice is not a new one to this discussion and as such much of the argument and discussion contained in this book is not new either, if you have read the papers or watched the discussion shows and news items that have dealt with the marginalization of Christian faith, issues such as being forbidden to wear crosses, refusing to see clients due to conscience of faith, then you have heard much of the opinion largely put forward in this book. That said this book is a good solid rehashing of those arguments and does offer clarification and cohesion of the subject matter and the larger arguments and agenda. Perhaps the most interesting parts of the book are the area’s where he addresses issues such as the intrinsic but ignored alignment of Christianity to our secular state, how the movement of one without the other can have damaging effect and indeed how the one can counterbalance the other to good effect in some small ways, along with the call for Christians to be more positively engaged, active, accepting and involved in their communities.
