In his influential book, The God Delusion, currently Amazon’s 8th bestselling title, the atheist Richard Dawkins argues forcefully that the world would be a far happier place without religion, all versions of which are a massive delusion, founded on lies and hypocrisy. Without God, there would have been no Crusades, no wars, no 9/11 or 7/7. People would live together peaceably and common sense would prevail. He’s a likeable character, his writing is sharp and brilliant, and his beliefs have transmuted into widely-believed popular myth. He is outraged by the burqa worn by some Muslim women and accuses religious people of wearing symbolic burqas that restrict their vision of the world, yet this equally forceful book tackles Richard Dawkins for having a restricted view himself, shaped by 19th century Darwinism. His writings do challenge Christians (and people of other faiths) to think more deeply about their beliefs and shake them out of any complacency. Christians need to hear some of the uncomfortable things he says and to know how to answer his alluring claims. Here is a robust and informed challenge to Dawkins’ gospel of atheism.

Richard Dawkins book The God Delusion is a best seller although it has had bad reviews. He leaves so many questions unanswered and has stirred any number of Christian scientists and writers to respond with short papers and longer books. I found Challenging Richard Dawkins by Kathleen Jones a gripping read, easy to understand, thought provoking and satisfyingly damning of the thinking of Richard Dawkins. Point by point she works through The God Delusion explaining, teaching and shirking nothing. The result is an ideal book to give to anyone disturbed by reading Richard Dawkins book, or just curious to hear the ‘other side’ of the picture. This title could equally well be in the category Evangelism or in ‘Learning About Our Faith’, perhaps we ought to thank Richard Dawkins for strengthening many peoples faith in God by these books written to deny his opinions!

A really great and entertaining read, the author (an emeritus professor of social policy with many books to her name) has produced a real challenge to Richard Dawkins, not only tackling him on his own ground of the pure sciences but drawing on history, and philosophy as well as science to challenge Dawkins and argue the case for our creator. I really loved this book-so thoroughly researched with footnotes and index ans such a great read - I couldn't put it down. Would make a great gift. Enjoy!
