In this astute mix of cultural critique and biblical studies, John H. Walton presents and defends twenty propositions supporting a literary and theological understanding of Genesis 1 within the context of the ancient Near Eastern world and unpacks its implications for our modern scientific understanding of origins.

Ideal for students, professors, pastors and lay readers with an interest in the intelligent design controversy and creation-evolution debates, Walton's thoughtful analysis unpacks seldom appreciated aspects of the biblical text and sets Bible-believing scientists free to investigate the question of origins.

As a Bible believing scientist, educationist and practising Christian I have long sought for a genuine solution to the challenges of Genesis 1. In this book John Walton makes sense of so much that has confused the debate in the past. More than that, when you then view other passages of Scripture in the light of Professor Walton's interpretation, the light shines in these, too, and produces a sense of completeness that is both intellectually and spiritually satisfying. I would commend this book as a must read to all who genuinely seek after a better understanding of the truth, whatever side of the debate they are on, be they Christian or secular atheist.
