The desire for a greater knowledge of God captivated those who founded the Keswick Convention.

Longing is part of being human. We have thoughts, we have desires. We are not just thinkers, but lovers. That’s how God made us and he made us for himself. So when our desires lead us astray it doesn’t mean that desire is wrong, rather that we are longing for the wrong things. Ultimately whether we know it or not our longing is for him.

Longing is awoken in us when we experience the brokenness of a fallen world; longing comes when something is missing, when there’s an intangible void to fill, a higher level of beauty to achieve. In the words of C. S. Lewis: “the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.”

Like a bride’s love for the heavenly bridegroom, only our relationship with Christ will truly satisfy this longing. Like life-giving water to a parched soul. “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink” (John 7:37). Longing speaks of the oneness We yearn for a completeness in Christ. Longing fits our past and the object of our longing is our future.

The Keswick Convention has been around for a year or two, first being held in 1875! I'm not sure they were recording the worship back then, but they have been consistently releasing albums for a number of years on the Essential Christian label (formerly known as Elevation). Where the Spring Harvest releases have always championed a number of new songs and Soul Survivor and NewDay have aimed at the youth market, Keswick have become known for the more traditional styles of worship. That doesn't mean these are old hymns played on church organs, in fact many of the hymns and songs included on this release are new compositions. The Worship Leaders at Keswick Convention for 2019 that are featured on this album include Colin Webster and EMU Music who have become regular worship leaders. An addition for 2019 is Olly Knight who was leading at Keswick for the first time. So there are some tracks that are brand new on this album but the opening track, Olly Knight's "Fountain of Goodness" isn't one of them. Although it sounds quite new and it is a style that isn't often associated with Keswick this song was actually writen in 2012. I am sure that it being included on this collection will have people hearing it for the first time and maybe including it in their church worship. However there are some almost brend-new tracks and "Eternal Father, Gracious King" is one. Originally written for use in prayer meetings, this has transferred well to communal singing and here it is led by Colin Webster. There are a couple of recent songs from EMU music including "Creation Awaits" and "Hymn of the Saviour" and both of these are really worthy and beautiful tracks. Colin also brings one of his latest songs to the convention in "The Longing Of My Soul" which is not quite as lively as EMU Music but still well worth a listen. In this mix there are also some fairly recent songs like "He Will Hold Me Fast" popularised by Keith Getty and Hillsong's "Man of Sorrows" along with a couple of others. I would normally say that it wouldn't be a Keswick release without a Getty / Townend track, but this album does not have one! However, you shouldn't be too disappointed as there is "Rejoice, The Lord Is King" originally by John Wesley, although this is an updated version. There is also a version of William Cowpers "O For A Closer Walk With God" and this stays close to the orginal with some extra bits added by Colin Webster. Finally there is a song that they couldn't change as the last song of the album and the final one of the conference itself, and the conference in it's old home, an acapella version of Charles Wesley's classic "And Can It Be". I actually think that this is the most rounded Keswick album that I have heard in a few years. Whilst largely sticking to a more hymn-based format the music sounds lively and more up to date than I remember from previous years and that is definitely not a bad thing! The inclusion of Olly Knight is a big plus bringing his own style to those tracks he leads. Where they have used older hymns they have largely kept to the familiar tunes and that last song shows that these classic old hymns are not going anywhere either. This is an album that has enough to keep any hymn lovers happy whether they like them ancient or modern.

Live Worship From The Keswick Convention overflows with stirring hymns and heartfelt songs of worship expressing love and longing for a true and faithful God, it's a great way to sum up this album. Worship Leaders Colin Webster, EMU Music and Olly Knight lead an inspiring selection of songs including "He Will Hold Me Fast", "Man Of Sorrows" and "The Longing Of My Soul". In a world with so many live albums Keswick always seem to stand out. If you think about it, from a purely British perspective, we used to have live albums from Soul Survivor, Spring Harvest, New Wine, and Keswick are always in that mix. The driven ‘Fountain Of Goodness’ is a wonderful opener, I’ll always give credit where it’s due and I have to add that credit on this track it must be given to the bass and drums - there is some wonderful work going on here. Overall the album is full of strong qualities like these. In comparison to some live albums, this live album as a whole has a more traditional worship sound to it, there are times where the main focus are the lyrics and nothing else. That really isn't a bad thing, and maybe it's missed by some albums in general with the noise of modern songs, but that's a whole different question. But with the quality being so brilliant you can not help but be drawn into how powerful some of these songs are. Olly and Colin have led this convention from a worship perspective so well and I'm sure if you attended this event or not, you will enjoy this album. 3.5/5
