Rohr's thesis in writing the book is that, "most of us tend to think of the second half of life as largely about getting old, dealing with health issues, and letting go of our physical life, but the whole thesis of this book is exactly the opposite. What looks like falling can largely be experienced as falling upward and onward, into a broader and deeper world, where the soul has found its fullness, is finally connected to the whole and lives inside the big picture." (p153) Rohr divides life into two stages, in the first stage we try to gain security and meaning for our lives. Rohr pictures this as building a "strong container" or "identity" (pxiii), in the second stage of life we begin to fill the "container" with meaning. Falling upwards is about how we deal with those experiences or failures in our lives, we stumble and fall, our own resources are not sufficient. The experience can be used to push us into a deeper relationship with God, instead of falling down we fall up into God's hands. This leads on to our spiritual life developing and filling the "container" we made in the first stage of life with meaning.
