Many of us are serving, and feel like we're sinking. We feel joyless, weary and burdened.

John Hindley shows how Jesus was telling the truth when he offered people an "easy yoke"—a way of serving him that is joyful and liberating. He explains why serving is so often joyless—and how our identity in Christ changes everything.

If you are serving, but sometimes feel as though you're sinking… you need this book!

If you know someone who has burn out, or is heading in that direction... they need this book too.

Serving with sinking...

  • Encourages readers to see not only how they serve, but WHY they serve
  • Points Christians away from themselves and back to Jesus

I bought this book because the title summed up neatly how I was feeling - spreading myself thin over too many ministries, and feeling that I wasn't serving any of them well and was sinking myself. I was hoping for some advice and/or strategies for putting my spiritual gifts to their best use, whilst also honouring my own well-being and that of my family. The first half of the book looks at the different motivations that one has for serving, whilst the second half looks at one's attitude to serving and how to change it so that one feels fulfilled in what one is doing. Clearly, this book is not aimed at people like myself because, by the time I had read it, I just felt even more guilty about the fact that I am overwhelmed; that it was about my attitude and not that I might be trying to do too much. The message in the book seems to be that we should all be serving (not disagreeing with that) and that if we are not feeling happy in how we are serving, it is up to us to change our approach, rather than acknowledging that it may be because we are not in the best fit ministry for us, or that we just aren't able to give that much commitment. In retrospect the book 'What you do best in the body of Christ' by Bruce Bugbee is a better fit for anyone looking to identify their spiritual gifts and work out how to best use them for the glory of God. Personally, I was disappointed with the book, but perhaps my expectations of it were unrealistic or misguided. It is well written and researched, with short chapters which make for easy reading. John HIndley often personalises his examples, bringing them into our own experience. Certainly for someone who is dedicated to serving, but has lost the joy involved, this may help.
