I was given this book when I was Confirmed in 1977, and used it for many years. I have since given it as Confirmation gifts in various parishes, and we have recently purchased a copy for every household in our church family to help and encourage people to pray. I cannot commend it highly enough.

This book was recommended to me on my journey to ordination and has been invaluable all through my ministry and beyond. A handy prayer book in all circumstances and for all people.

First published in 1977 as a stapled booklet this title has evolved over the years selling over 100,000 copies as it did so: the only surprise is that the number is not higher. Now SPCK have taken over the publication and produced what they call The Definitive Edition which will hopefully ensure the continuance of this well loved treasure. Harry Ogden spent his working life in a number of parishes in the Manchester diocese and the original booklet was published and distributed by the Friends of Christ Church, Moss Side, Manchester. The old copy I have beside me bears testimony of its usefulness, in its worn pages. SPCK’s edition is a slightly larger paperback and will hopefully reach yet more people. The layout is only re-arranged; much will be familiar to lovers of this work. It is an ideal gift for any Anglican and particularly as a Confirmation present for any age. Its directions for living the Christian life are clear and direct. The prayers and liturgies come from various sources and are listed in the ‘acknowledgements.’
