The Church of Scotland has drawn on the findings of extensive new research that it has commissioned in order to put together this set of carefully crafted and informed resources aimed at helping every congregation to understand why people leave the Church, how to avoid unnecessary departures and, above all, to develop an enriching, vital Christian fellowship with the large numbers of Churchless Christians in every community across the country.

This ground-breaking book, illustrated by Dave Walker, offers information, hope, insight, prayerful reflection and practical ideas for bringing together in fellowship all Christians, whether they are members of an institutional Church or not.

This book is well worth reading whether you are inside, outside or somewhere in between what is considered church in the popular mind. Through it I have understood better about myself and my calling as a missionary Christian. I have been uneasy for maybe 20 years about being more comfortable with those on the margins of, or wholly outside, the organised church than with many Christians in churches. The barrier for me was a focus on rules and procedures in an organisation before a focus on the needs of those around us which seems contrary to the way Jesus, the Word, did things as reported in the Gospels. Not that rules & regulations do not have a place, but not the first place before anything is considered, which seems to be the common default position which can block an opportunity to move "in the Spirit" with thinking. This book has stirred me, and positively. It is not critical of churches per se, but it does critique the church and the way it may be ignoring many Christians who are part of the Invisible Church not counted in Sunday audits. Church leaders, please read. Church members, please read. Denominational leaders please read. This book may reveal a lot about how those looking from the outside see us.
